During the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix unveiled several announcements for its upcoming titles, with the biggest reveal being Final Fantasy Resonance, the first game in the history of the Final Fantasy franchise to adopt the popular HD-2D visual style.

The company confirmed that the new title will launch on October 22, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. The Standard Edition will be priced at $49.99.

Square Enix describes the game as a celebration of the Final Fantasy legacy, blending the classic elements that defined the series with modern game design technologies. The story revolves around a brand-new crystal-themed adventure and features a strategic turn-based combat system enhanced with modern mechanics that provide players with greater flexibility during battles.

What Does Final Fantasy Resonance Offer?

The game brings back many fan-favorite elements from across the franchise, including the iconic Chocobos, legendary Espers, and Airships. It will also feature appearances from several well-known Final Fantasy characters, including Cloud, Tidus, and the Warrior of Light.

Final Fantasy Resonance is based on the original story from the mobile title FINAL FANTASY Brave Exvius, but Square Enix emphasized that it is not simply an upgraded version of the mobile game. Instead, it has been completely rebuilt and redesigned to deliver a full-scale RPG experience comparable to modern console releases.

The company also confirmed that the new HD-2D visuals will combine classic pixel-art aesthetics with modern visual effects, a style that has proven highly successful in several of Square Enix’s recent releases.

Alongside the announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance, Square Enix showcased new trailers and updates for several upcoming projects, including Kingdom Hearts IV, DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World, Final Fantasy XIV Online on Nintendo Switch 2, and the return of the KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III].

The game will also be available in a Digital Deluxe Edition priced at $59.99, which includes the base game along with various in-game bonus items.

For collectors, a Collector’s Edition will be offered for $209.99, featuring:

  • The base game
  • All Digital Deluxe Edition bonuses
  • An exclusive art book
  • Original soundtrack collection
  • A special promotional card for the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game

Square Enix appears to be positioning Final Fantasy Resonance as a project that bridges nostalgia and modern design. More importantly, it represents the first official step for the Final Fantasy franchise into the HD-2D genre, potentially opening the door for similar projects in the future.

Players can watch the official reveal trailer now to get a first look at the game in action.
