As the Final Fantasy VII Remake project approaches its conclusion, discussions have increasingly shifted toward what comes next for the development team after spending years working on one of Square Enix’s most ambitious productions. In this context, Naoki Hamaguchi, director of the remake trilogy, recently spoke about his future ambitions once development on the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII: Revelation is complete.

Final Fantasy VII remains one of the most iconic Japanese RPGs in gaming history. Originally released in 1997 on the original PlayStation, the game returned through an extensive remake project divided into three separate installments. That journey is currently scheduled to conclude with the launch of Final Fantasy VII: Revelation in Spring 2027.

Final Fantasy VII Director Looking for a New Challenge

During a recent interview with Game Informer, Hamaguchi was asked about his plans after completing the remake trilogy. He explained that his full attention is currently focused on delivering the best possible conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII story, emphasizing that the project still requires significant work before it reaches players.

Final Fantasy VII director also jokingly addressed frequent fan requests for a remake of Final Fantasy VI, an idea that often surfaces whenever Square Enix’s future projects are discussed.

Despite his strong connection to the Final Fantasy universe, Hamaguchi revealed that he would like to work on an entirely new JRPG after finishing Revelation. While he acknowledged that leading another large-scale Final Fantasy project would be exciting, he believes that taking on a different franchise within Square Enix’s portfolio could be even more appealing because of the fresh challenges it would present.

According to Final Fantasy VII director, Square Enix possesses numerous intellectual properties capable of delivering major role-playing experiences that can resonate with players around the world, and the company’s future ambitions extend beyond Final Fantasy alone.

Final Fantasy VII director added that fans may have their own expectations regarding the next step in his career, but personally he is eager to pursue something different once the remake trilogy is complete. Whether that project remains within the Final Fantasy brand or belongs to an entirely different franchise, he is interested in exploring new creative opportunities.

Final Fantasy VII director concluded by saying that no decision has yet been made regarding his next project. However, he hopes players will look forward to what he creates in the future after spending many years helping develop one of the most influential and celebrated RPGs in gaming history.
