Debate surrounding GTA 6 on PS5 Pro continues to intensify as the game’s release draws closer and new reports about console performance continue to emerge. Recent retailer leaks reignited speculation after suggesting that the game would feature both Quality and Performance modes, leading many players to assume that a 60 FPS option would be available.
However, a new report from the experts at Digital Foundry suggests the situation may be very different, arguing that the presence of multiple graphics modes does not necessarily mean the game is targeting 60 frames per second.
GTA 6 on PS5 Pro May Be Limited to 30 FPS and 40 FPS Modes
According to the report, GTA 6 is unlikely to include a dedicated 60 FPS mode, even on the PS5 Pro, Sony’s most powerful current-generation console.
Digital Foundry analysts believe the most realistic scenario is the inclusion of two performance profiles: a standard 30 FPS mode and a 40 FPS mode for players using displays that support 120Hz refresh rates. Several modern games have adopted this approach as a compromise between image quality and smoother gameplay.
The report explains that the primary limitation isn’t the GPU but the CPU. GTA 6 is expected to feature a massive open world, advanced AI systems, a large number of NPCs, dynamic traffic, and complex environmental interactions—all of which place a heavy workload on the processor.
While the PS5 Pro offers a significant graphics processing upgrade over the standard PS5, Digital Foundry notes that the CPU improvements are relatively modest and likely insufficient to run a game of this scale at a consistent 60 FPS.
As a result, the PS5 Pro version is expected to prioritize higher rendering resolutions and enhanced visual features, including improved lighting, reflections, and environmental detail, rather than a higher frame rate. This would align with Rockstar’s long-standing philosophy of delivering the best possible visual presentation on consoles.
The report also points out that Rockstar has historically not targeted 60 FPS for its flagship console releases, making a similar approach for GTA 6 unsurprising to many industry analysts.
At the time of writing, Rockstar Games has not officially revealed the game’s performance modes. As such, all current discussions regarding GTA 6 on PS5 Pro remain based on analysis and unconfirmed leaks, with players awaiting official confirmation from Rockstar.
