A new statement from Avalanche Studios’ co-founder Christofer Sundberg has stirred major discussion across the gaming community about the Just Cause Series, after he hinted that development on Just Cause 5 is no longer active — strongly suggesting that the Just Cause franchise has effectively been canceled after two decades of explosive open-world action.

Why the Just Cause Series May Be Canceled

In a post shared on X (formerly Twitter), Sundberg revealed that the next Just Cause title is no longer part of Avalanche’s current development roadmap. He explained that most of the original developers who worked on previous entries have left the studio, which makes a new sequel highly unlikely.

Me and my team pitched Contraband back in 2017 to MSFT (and signed it). It’s changed quite a lot since then obviously, but it would have been fantastic to see it being released one day somehow. #JC5 would be a no-go since extremely few from the original team are there still.

Sundberg added that several factors contributed to the project’s disappearance, including internal management changes, coordination challenges with publisher Square Enix, and a decline in creative enthusiasm toward the series over the past few years.

According to him, these issues made developing Just Cause 5 “a difficult and unrealistic task for the current team,” confirming that Avalanche is now fully focused on new, unrelated projects.

Square Enix Remains Silent on the Franchise’s Fate

Despite Sundberg’s clear remarks, Square Enix, which holds the intellectual property rights to Just Cause, has not released any official statement regarding the series’ cancellation.

However, multiple signs indicate that the project was quietly shelved in 2023, following a brief pre-production phase that never reached significant progress.

The last entry, Just Cause 4, launched in 2018 and received a mixed critical reception while failing to meet commercial expectations. That underperformance may have been the final push for the publisher to reconsider the franchise’s long-term viability.

End of an Era for Open-World Mayhem

If confirmed, the cancellation marks a disappointing end for one of gaming’s most chaotic open-world franchises — a series beloved for its over-the-top explosions, high-speed stunts, and creative destruction.

Fans who were hoping for a proper sequel will likely have to wait indefinitely, unless Square Enix decides to revive Just Cause in the future under a new creative direction or development team.

Until then, the series that once redefined action-sandbox gameplay with its signature wingsuit dives and grappling-hook chaos appears to have reached its explosive finale.
