The Need for Speed series has long stood as an iconic name in the racing game genre since its inception in the ’90s, seamlessly blending realistic racing and immersive street racing experiences. However, despite its storied history and significant fanbase, the franchise has seen a noticeable decline in recent years, reportedly leading Electronic Arts (EA) to freeze the Need for Speed series altogether, according to recent reports.
In a surprising and shocking move, especially for fans of the series and racing game enthusiasts in general, recent reports have emerged claiming that Electronic Arts (EA) has frozen the Need for Speed franchise. This has raised many questions about the future of a series that is considered among the oldest and most prestigious racing franchises in the gaming industry.
Need for Speed Series Could be at a Risky End
The news of the franchise freeze came from an unexpected yet credible source. Photographer and writer Matthew Everingham, a contributor to Speedhunters, revealed through his Instagram account that the Speedhunters website has been “frozen” due to EA withdrawing its funding.
Everingham indicated that the Need for Speed series had similarly been frozen, meaning that work on any new installments has ceased. Notably, Speedhunters, a platform dedicated to global car culture, had previously received direct support from EA.
Here’s what the source mentioned in his post about the Need for Speed freeze:
Speedhunters is on ice.
EA shelved Need For Speed, and that means no more funding for the site.Grateful for everything — the trips, the stories, the lifelong mates.
I’m still shooting, just shifting gears into more video. Here’s a few highlights from that wild chapter.
Appreciate everyone who came along for the ride.
It’s worth mentioning that EA had officially announced earlier the cessation of support for “Need for Speed: Rivals” starting October 7, 2025, a title originally released back in 2013.
