The gaming industry has been surrounded by controversy in recent days following a series of reports discussing major changes within Xbox as part of a broader restructuring plan reportedly aimed at refocusing the company on larger projects and blockbuster franchises.
According to these reports, several Xbox-owned studios are facing potential closure or reorganization, including some well-known names in the industry. However, the biggest surprise came when Ninja Theory was mentioned among those studios, despite recently unveiling its new project, Senua, during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.
Senua May Have Been Part of a Strategy to Attract Investors
According to a report published by Game File, Microsoft had already been discussing plans regarding the future of Ninja Theory before the recent showcase event took place. The report suggests that the announcement of Senua was not simply intended to reveal a new game, but also to increase the studio’s appeal to potential investors or buyers.
Sources cited in the report claim that Microsoft believed announcing a new AAA project scheduled for release in 2027 would make Ninja Theory a more valuable asset if the company decided to sell the studio or allow it to operate independently from Xbox in the future.
Even more interestingly, the report alleges that discussions about shutting down the studio or parting ways with it had already begun before the game was officially revealed. There is also no confirmed information regarding whether the decision to announce Senua was fully coordinated with, or approved by, the studio’s management.
Over the past eight years, Ninja Theory has released only two games, leading some observers to believe the studio had been under increasing pressure for quite some time. This pressure appears to align with Xbox’s newer strategy of prioritizing franchises and projects with stronger commercial potential and broader global appeal.
Many players have argued that unveiling a major title such as Senua while simultaneously discussing the possibility of selling or closing the studio sends mixed signals. As a result, Microsoft has faced criticism across social media platforms following the report.
On the other hand, reports indicate that Xbox may give some of its studios the opportunity to negotiate buyouts or pursue independence rather than face outright closure. Because of this, Ninja Theory fans still have reason to remain hopeful that the studio can secure a solution that allows development of Senua to continue while preserving the team’s future within the gaming industry.
