With a completely fresh start for The Witcher 4 and a gap of more than ten years since the last mainline entry, expectations surrounding the next installment are exceptionally high. CD Projekt Red is fully aware of these expectations and is therefore approaching the project with extreme caution, aiming to avoid a repeat of the issues that accompanied the launch of Cyberpunk 2077.

What stands out this time is that The Witcher 4 represents the most ambitious leap in the studio’s history, both in scope and vision. The game will introduce an entirely new protagonist and abandon the studio’s proprietary redENGINE in favor of Unreal Engine 5, a move that unlocks far greater technical possibilities but significantly increases development costs.

The Witcher 4 Budget Reaches Record-Breaking Levels

According to a report by Noble Securities analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski, the development budget for The Witcher 4 is estimated at approximately 1.4 billion Polish złoty, with a similar amount allocated for marketing. When converted, the total budget reaches around 776 million USD, bringing it very close to the 800 million dollar mark.

The significance of these figures lies in how rare such budgets are within the industry. Only a handful of games have previously exceeded the 500 million dollar threshold, including titles such as GTA 6 and Star Citizen. The Witcher 4 nearing the one-billion-dollar line highlights the massive bet CD Projekt Red is placing on this project.

For comparison, the development cost of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was estimated at around 81 million dollars, meaning the development cost of the new entry alone is nearly ten times higher.

The same report notes that nearly 500 developers are currently working on The Witcher 4, with a target release window set for the fourth quarter of 2027. Heavy investment in training teams and fully utilizing Unreal Engine 5 has played a direct role in driving the budget upward.

The studio’s ambitions do not stop there. The report also reveals that an entirely new Witcher trilogy is planned to release within a six-year window following the launch of The Witcher 4, with a combined development budget estimated at 3.2 billion Polish złoty—roughly 887 million USD.

At these levels, The Witcher 4’s budget is no longer just a production cost, but a clear indicator of a massive project that could reshape the future of single-player role-playing games for years to come.
