Halo Campaign Evolved Review

Halo Campaign Evolved Review

When you think back to 2001, you’ll probably remember the unique feeling of picking up a controller for the first time and stepping into the world of Halo: Combat Evolved. It wasn’t just another first-person shooter—it was the game that redefined console FPS titles and laid the foundation for the genre as we know it today. Even after its return in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, fans have continued to hope for a version that truly brings this legendary experience into the modern era with cutting-edge visuals and technology.

That hope became reality when Halo Studios and Xbox unveiled Halo: Campaign Evolved, a complete remake built entirely in Unreal Engine 5. More than a visual upgrade, the project serves as a gateway for a whole new generation to experience Master Chief’s first adventure. Perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that the game is launching on PlayStation 5, marking the first time this iconic Halo campaign reaches a competing platform.

But the developers didn’t stop at improved visuals. Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces modern gameplay mechanics inspired by later entries in the series, fully re-recorded dialogue and voice performances, and brand-new prequel missions that expand the game’s story and lore. With nearly 25 years of legacy behind it, Halo: Campaign Evolved carries the enormous responsibility of reintroducing one of gaming’s greatest classics.

So, has Halo Studios delivered the remake longtime fans have been waiting for, or have these bold changes pulled the game too far away from its classic identity? That’s exactly what we’ll find out in our full Halo Campaign Evolved review.

Returning to the Legendary Ring With Brand-New Prequel Missions

Halo Campaign Evolved Review

Halo: Campaign Evolved retells the iconic story of Master Chief and the AI companion Cortana as they wage war against the Covenant, uncover the secrets of the mysterious Halo ring, and face the terrifying Flood. While the overall narrative remains faithful to the original campaign, every line of dialogue has been re-recorded, bringing noticeable changes to the tone and personalities of several characters.

The biggest narrative addition comes in the form of three brand-new prequel missions set one year before the events of the original game. These missions place players alongside Sergeant Johnson during early battles against the Covenant while exploring the origins of the conflict and introducing new enemies and weapons, including the Brutes.

That said, these story changes are likely to divide longtime fans. Master Chief is now far more talkative than his traditionally stoic counterpart, several iconic lines have been rewritten, and a number of humorous exchanges have been added, shifting the tone away from the darker, more epic atmosphere that defined the original game.

Gameplay: A Blend of Classic Halo and Modern Design

Halo Campaign Evolved Review

Halo: Campaign Evolved introduces a wide range of gameplay improvements designed to modernize the experience. Players can now sprint, aim down sights (ADS) with every weapon, and hijack enemy vehicles such as the Banshee and Ghost—features that were absent from the original Halo: Combat Evolved.

If the gameplay could be summarized in a single phrase, it would be pure fun. The developers have successfully preserved the formula that made Halo stand out while adding modern refinements that make every firefight feel responsive and satisfying.

Gunplay remains one of the game’s strongest qualities. Every weapon has its own distinctive feel, from the kick of the iconic Assault Rifle to the unmistakable hum of Covenant plasma weapons, giving each firearm a unique identity.

The environmental design also deserves praise. Players constantly transition between massive open battlefields that encourage exploration and large-scale encounters, and narrow interior corridors where every corner demands caution. While these locations are visually stunning, longtime Halo fans will immediately recognize many of them from later entries in the series, making some environments feel familiar—and occasionally repetitive.

The real strength of the gameplay lies in the variety of combat scenarios. You’re not simply shooting waves of enemies; you’re constantly managing ammunition, switching weapons to counter different enemy types and shields, jumping into iconic vehicles to break through enemy lines, and adapting to AI that continuously changes its tactics. This combination of fast-paced action and strategic flexibility ensures that every encounter feels dynamic and remains enjoyable throughout the campaign.

The game now features 17 weapons, including classic Halo favorites alongside weapons introduced in later entries, such as the SMG, Needle Rifle, and the collectible Energy Sword. Classic Health Packs have also been removed in favor of the now-standard regenerative health system.

Halo: Campaign Evolved also supports four-player online co-op, introduces a Campaign Remix mode that reshuffles enemy and weapon placements to improve replayability, and includes more than 30 Skulls, including an entirely new third-person gameplay mode.

Unfortunately, the gameplay isn’t without flaws. Higher difficulty settings, particularly Heroic and Legendary, suffer from poor encounter balancing, with certain rooms packed with overwhelming numbers of Elite enemies. Hunter AI also feels noticeably less responsive, while the iconic Warthog no longer handles with the same satisfying physics that fans remember from the original.

It’s also worth noting that Halo: Campaign Evolved focuses exclusively on the campaign experience and does not include any Multiplayer PvP mode.

Visuals and Audio: Stunning Presentation Held Back by Technical Issues

Halo Campaign Evolved Review

From a visual standpoint, Unreal Engine 5 shines throughout the game’s outdoor environments. Areas such as Silent Cartographer look spectacular, with realistic lighting, heavy rainfall, impressive reflections, and highly detailed Flood enemies that make the horror elements more disturbing than ever.

However, visual quality isn’t entirely consistent. Indoor corridors and facilities often appear noticeably less detailed than the outdoor environments. Technical issues also become apparent during larger battles, with frame rate drops and reduced environmental detail affecting overall performance.

The audio presentation tells a similar story. While the newly directed cinematic sequences are well produced, the redesigned weapon sound effects—particularly for the iconic Pistol and Sniper Rifle—lack the impact and instantly recognizable identity that made the original weapons so memorable.

Halo Campaign Evolved Review Final Verdict

Halo: Campaign Evolved successfully modernizes one of gaming’s greatest first-person shooters with impressive visuals and refined gameplay, making Master Chief’s first adventure more accessible than ever—particularly for PlayStation 5 players experiencing Halo for the first time. However, some of its creative changes may alienate longtime fans by altering the original tone, gameplay balance, and overall identity. The lack of multiplayer is another notable drawback.
