I was lucky enough to play Helldivers 2 on PS5 when it first launched. Now, I’ve jumped back in on Xbox to experience it with cross-play alongside players on other platforms. The big question: does Helldivers 2 still stand out as one of the best third-person co-op shooters, and how does the Xbox version hold up? Let’s find out in Helldivers 2 Xbox review.
Story Overview (No Spoilers)
Set in a distant future, humanity is united under “Super Earth,” a government that markets itself as the beacon of freedom and democracy.
In this world, humanity faces brutal threats from giant insectoid aliens known as Terminids, advanced machines called Automatons, and the Illuminate faction, which was added post-launch. To combat these threats, elite soldiers known as Helldivers are deployed on high-risk missions across various planets—ostensibly to protect Super Earth, but also to expand its control.
The narrative is not presented through cutscenes or character-driven drama. Instead, it’s delivered in a satirical, tongue-in-cheek style with clear political undertones reminiscent of Starship Troopers. Players gradually realize that these wars may not be about freedom at all, but about propaganda, exploitation, and expansionism.
Daily and weekly missions drive forward the “live” aspect of the story, while world events unfold regardless of player involvement. This dynamic storytelling approach keeps the lore engaging, funny, and surprisingly thought-provoking.
The Xbox release adds the Illuminate faction, though not as a console-exclusive—it’s part of the seasonal content updates that have been rolling out since launch.
What Sets the Xbox Version Apart
The Xbox version includes all current content: factions, modes, and cooperative features available on PlayStation and PC, along with full cross-play.
However, the game lacks cross-progression. If you own it on multiple platforms, you’ll need to start from scratch on Xbox. Given the grind-heavy progression system, this is a frustrating omission.
During my playtime, I also noticed the same technical quirks I encountered on PS5: texture pop-ins, random floating objects, and occasional desync issues where teammates saw me in a different position than I actually was.
The biggest new content highlight for Xbox is the Halo ODST-inspired Legendary Warbond pack. It adds themed armor and weapons, though at a steep $15 price tag. You can earn it for free in-game, but it requires significant grinding.
Xbox Performance
I tested the game on Xbox Series S. Helldivers 2 uses Dynamic Resolution Scaling and Variable Rate Shading to balance visuals and performance.
-
Performance Mode: Internal resolution can drop as low as 720p, resulting in inconsistent image quality.
-
Quality Mode: Runs at 1080p, but textures look soft and lighting clarity suffers.
Compared to PS5 and Series X, Series S falls noticeably behind. A particular bug caused the sky and ambient lighting to appear washed-out gray, hurting immersion. This seems like a software issue rather than a hardware limit and could be fixed in a future patch.
Overall, the game remains playable, but image sharpness and lighting are clearly weaker than on more powerful consoles.
Helldivers 2 Xbox Review – Final Verdict
The Xbox release of Helldivers 2 marks a major shift for PlayStation as a publisher, allowing players on rival platforms to enjoy one of its strongest co-op shooters. The full experience is here—packed with content, cross-play, and signature chaotic fun.
Still, technical hitches and the lack of cross-progression hold it back. If you’re an Xbox player who missed out before, this is one of the best co-op action shooters you can play today.
