Rockstar’s announcement last week that GTA 6 has been delayed from May to November 2026 sparked frustration across the gaming community. But on the other side of the industry, the developer of 007 First Light had a very different reaction. IO Interactive openly welcomed the decision, seeing the delay as a golden opportunity to avoid an uneven clash with one of the biggest releases of the generation.
A Delay That Gives 007 First Light Room to Breathe
Both 007: First Light and GTA 6 were originally lined up for a spring release, separated by only a few months. That would have placed IO Interactive in a risky position.
Players naturally gravitate toward major, full-priced blockbuster releases, and with the current economic climate, many gamers simply cannot buy multiple AAA titles in a short window.
For that reason, the developer’s relief is understandable—GTA 6 shifting to November gives 007 First Light a better chance to shine without being overshadowed by Rockstar’s giant.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak spoke about the impact GTA 6 could have had on their game. stating that It would be a lie to say spring doesn’t look better for them now, but GTA 6 remains a welcome addition to the industry.
Abrak’s comments suggest that the studio’s positive reaction isn’t just about avoiding direct competition. He seems to believe that GTA 6 is beneficial for the industry as a whole, even if its presence has a massive influence on the market.
A Busy Spring Despite GTA 6’s Exit
Even with the delay, spring 2026 is shaping up to be crowded with major releases. 007: First Light is launching in a packed schedule that includes Saros, Crimson Desert, and the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Remake in March, while Resident Evil Requiem is targeting February.
This means the first half of 2026 will still be fiercely competitive, despite GTA 6 stepping away from that window.
In the end, the developer’s excitement over the GTA 6 delay makes complete sense. It gives 007: First Light valuable breathing room in a marketplace full of heavy-hitting titles. With more space between release dates, the game stands a stronger chance of receiving the attention it deserves when it launches.
