Activision and Toys for Bob officially unveiled Spyro: A Realm Beyond during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, marking the return of one of the most beloved platforming icons in gaming history after nearly 18 years without a brand-new mainline entry.
The game serves as the first completely original Spyro adventure since 2008. While fans have enjoyed the remastered classic trilogy through Spyro Reignited Trilogy in recent years, this new installment aims to deliver a far more ambitious experience that blends the spirit of the original games with modern gameplay innovations.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond Brings the Biggest Evolution in Series History
According to the official details, the story takes place in a mysterious new world where Spyro finds himself stranded far from home. His journey soon becomes more complicated when an invading force known as the Scavs threatens the realm. The iconic purple dragon must forge new alliances and fight to protect this unfamiliar world before its fate is changed forever.
One of the Spyro: A Realm Beyond most significant features is the introduction of a fully free-flight system for the first time in the franchise’s history. Unlike previous entries, where flying was limited to specific levels or short gliding segments, players will now be able to soar freely across vast environments, exploring both the skies and the land below.
The development team explained that the new world was specifically designed around this mechanic, with a strong emphasis on exploration, fluid movement, and environmental interaction elements the studio considers fundamental to the original Spyro experience.
Fans of the series will also be pleased to learn that veteran voice actor Tom Kenny is returning to voice Spyro once again. Kenny’s performance has become closely associated with the character and remains a favorite among longtime players.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Toys for Bob hopes the game will mark the beginning of a new long-term era for the franchise, especially following the commercial success of the classic trilogy remaster in recent years.
