Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Review (PS5 Version)

Senua’s Saga Hellblade II Review

Since 2023, one Xbox exclusive after another has gradually made its way to other platforms—especially PlayStation 5. After Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Doom: The Dark Ages, and many others, it’s now the turn of another major title: Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, developed by Ninja Theory. The game has finally launched on PS5, and here we present our full Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Review for PS5, after playing it extensively.

Since the game originally released about a year ago as an Xbox Series X|S and PC exclusive, we won’t dive too deeply into the story or gameplay mechanics here. Instead, this review focuses on the visuals, audio, and technical performance of the PS5 version, including the technical modes available. Let’s get right into it.

Story Recap

We previously reviewed Hellblade II on Xbox and PC at launch in 2024, covering the story in full detail. The PS5 version contains no changes—it’s the same game rebuilt for a different platform.

In short: the story follows Senua, a young woman from the Orkney tribe in 8th-century Scotland. Her village is slaughtered by Viking raiders, pushing her into a journey of vengeance against those who hurt her and others with violence and destruction. All the while, Senua battles psychosis, which causes her to hear voices and see hallucinations—making her quest both external and deeply psychological.

Stunning Visuals and Immersive Audio

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Review (PS5 Version)

From its original release in 2024, Hellblade II has stood out as one of the most visually realistic games ever made. On PS5, nothing has changed—it still delivers the same jaw-dropping realism, whether in its environments, reflections, or facial detail.

Part of what drives this realism is its cinematic approach. The game uses black cinematic bars at the top and bottom of the screen—even during gameplay—and removes HUD elements entirely. Like The Order: 1886, this makes Hellblade II feel more like an interactive film than a traditional game. While this design choice has been divisive, it’s undeniably the reason why the visuals shine so brightly.

Character faces are the highlight, bringing unmatched emotion through expressions, lip movement, and subtle facial muscles. Sadness, fear, anger, or relief—you feel it all without a word spoken.

Environments are equally impressive: from rocks and grass to mountains and reflective water surfaces, everything feels handcrafted. Combat leaves visible wounds, splashes of blood, and environmental effects that heighten the game’s dark, oppressive atmosphere.

Audio is just as important—if not more so. The game strongly recommends playing with headphones, and for good reason. The voices in Senua’s head—hallucinations caused by her psychosis—are integral to the experience, pulling you into her torment. Combined with environmental sounds, a haunting soundtrack, and stellar voice acting, the audio design is a masterpiece that immerses you fully in Senua’s world.

Technical Performance on PS5

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Review (PS5 Version)

At launch on Xbox Series X|S, Hellblade II was locked to 30 FPS only, without a performance mode. While a 60 FPS update eventually came to Xbox, the PS5 version includes both Quality (30 FPS) and Performance (60 FPS) modes at launch, which is a big plus.

Visually, there are no significant differences between the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions—both look equally stunning. The PS5 Pro may hold a slight edge, but overall, the gap isn’t big enough to matter.

  • Quality Mode: 30 FPS, stable even during intense battles.

  • Performance Mode: 60 FPS, smooth throughout, with reduced visual detail but a big boost in fluidity.

The one real difference lies in DualSense controller support. With haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, the PS5 version heightens immersion beyond visuals and audio, making every sound, vibration, and sensation feel even closer to Senua’s perspective.
